Who We Are

Women’s Media Group, founded in 1973, is a New York-based nonprofit association of women who have achieved prominence in many fields of media. Our 250-plus members, drawn from book, magazine, and newspaper publishing; film, television, online and other digital media, meet, collaborate, inform and support one another as well as mentor young women interested in publishing careers. We seek to advance the position of all women through the power of communication and media.

  • TALKS @WMG: A great way to connect, these paid, sit-down events occur about four times a year. Guests are most welcome. Our luncheon speakers are prominent, accomplished women in media. Past speakers have included a U.S. Congresswoman, a New Yorker fiction editor, digital media executives, and more.

  • Master Class @WMG: These free events are smaller, informal, lunchtime roundtables, often held in a publisher’s conference room. Guests are welcome. You bring your own lunch and listen to an invited speaker give a short talk or moderate a discussion on an industry topic.

  • Members’ Small Dinners: Hosted by individual members at their homes or at a restaurant, groups of 6 to 8 members get acquainted in a more intimate setting.

  • Other events include our holiday party, wine and cheese tastings, movie screenings, summer happy hour, and whatever else our programming committee thinks up. There’s always room for new directions: Ideas are always welcome!

  • Group Discounts: Members enjoy discounts to industry conferences and events in the New York area.
  • WMG Scholars: We currently offer scholarships and fellowships to support the education of future publishing professionals who have demonstrated leadership in advancing literacy and promoting diversity/underrepresented voices in our industryThe WMG Scholars program is supported by the Women's Media Group Educational Foundation, WMG's 501c(3) non-profit organization. Meet the WMG Scholars here.

WMG provides a forum for networking, career development and advocacy. Activities include monthly meetings, seminars, cultural events. The group also runs a college fellowship for minority women.

The Women's Media Group is proud of the accomplishments and diversity of its members and seeks to advance the position of all women through the power of communication and media.

From its inception, WMG has worked to grow and support women. Recognizing the need for a women-only networking group was an important step in the ’70s. WMG members also were inspired by women speakers, which over the years have included Gloria Steinem, Molly Ivins, Beverly Sills, Susan Isaacs, Wendy Wasserstein, and Ruth Reichl. More recently, WMG’s events and speakers have helped members understand, discuss, and seek to address the deep changes unfolding in our industry.
